Taxonomy Flashcards
What is taxa or taxon?
It’s a level of organization within taxonomy (did king Phil come over for great snacks) ( domain ,kingdom, phylum, class, order, family , genus, species)
What are the three domains?
Domain bacteria, domain archaea, domain eukarya.
Which domain contains only one kingdom?
Domain bacteria
What is an autotroph?
An organism capable of making organic molecules (food) from inorganic sources. They are also called producers
What are the two types of autotrophs?
Photoautotrophs and chemoautotrophs
What does a photoautotroph do?
It uses light energy during the process of photosynthesis to produce their own organic materials
What is the function of a chemoautotroph?
Are cells that use inorganic energy sources to make their own organic materials during the process of chemosynthesis
What is the function of a Heterotroph
An organism that is unable to synthesize its own organic based compounds from inorganic sources, they are also called consumers and there are several different types
What are the types of Heterotrophs(consumers)
Herbivores, omnivores, Carnivores, detritvore and decomposers
What is a herbivore
Consumer which eats plants
What is a omnivore
Consumers that eat producers and other consumers
What is a carnivore
Consumers which eat other consumers
What is a detritvore
An animal that feeds on dead organic material, especially plant detritus(dead stuff)
What is a decomposer
Organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms, and in doing so carry out the natural process of decomposition. Usually bacteria or fungi
What are the type and organization of cells?
Unicellular, multicellular, colonial, eukaryotic cell and prokaryotic cell
Grouping organisms together based on their evolutionary history is called?
Evolutionary classification
What are the ways to see how closely related two organisms are?
DNA and RNA, homologous structures, embryological similarities and fossil records
What are DNA complementary pairs called?
(A-T) (C-G)
What is a homologous structure
Are similar physical features in organisms that share a common ancestor
What are embryological similarities?
They are similarities you can see in vertebrae embryos before hatching and they show similarities which can support common ancestry
What are fossil records and how do they work?
By arranging the fossil records of a group of organisms in a chronological sequence, scientists can decipher how they evolved
What is the dichotomous key?
A dichotomous key is a tool used to sort and identify unfamiliar organisms
What is taxonomy?
Is the branch of biology that identifies and classifies organisms
