Moss Flashcards
What is the sporophyte generation?
Sporophyte refers to all organs and tissues that are apart of the diploid(2N) generation.
What does the sporophyte generation do?
Produces haploid spores(N) by the process of meiosis which then germinate and grow into gametophyte generation(N) via mitosis
What is the gametophyte generation?
Refers to all organs and tissues that are apart of the haploid generation(N)
What does the gametophyte do?
This is the sexual part of the life cycle as it produces gametes, eggs and sperm (N) by mitosis. Fertilization, the fusion of haploid gametes forms a unicellular diploid zygote(2N)
What is kingdom plantae?
Members of this kingdom are eukaryotic, mostly multicellular. All are autotrophs and their cell wall is strengthened with cellulose
What life cycle does kingdom plantae go through?
They undergo a life cycle called alternation of generations. This means they alternate between two physical forms . A diploid sporophyte and a haploid gametophyte
What are the three main plant groups?
Aquatic(algae), non vascular(mosses and liverwort) and vascular (ferns, trees and flowers
What’s a carbon sink?
Is anything that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases.
What are peat bogs?
Pete bonds are formed as partially decompose organic material which accumulates as carbon rich peat
What organisms do moss provide a micro habitat for?
Provides a microhabitat in shelter for bacteria, fungi, mates, spiders, defeat, all my scorpion, snails, flatworms, insects, and other tiny organisms
