Taxonomy Flashcards
1
Q
By what two approaches can we study/classify organisms?
A
- morphology -> visual characteristics and shapes, used in the past
- anatomy -> structures behind the morphology (discovered through dissection)
2
Q
Based on what are organisms classified and who published the first classification system?
A
- o. classified based on similarities (used to be through morphology, now through genetics)
- Carl Linnaes (hierarchal naming structure)
3
Q
What are the five kingdoms?
A
- prokaryote
- protists -> like pr. but can swim and hunt for food (e.g. algae)
- plants -> eukaryotic autotrophs
- fungi -> eukaryotes, chitin cell wall, mostly saprotrophic
- animals -> eukaryotic heterotrophs
4
Q
What are the layers of classification?
A
- kingdom
- phylum
- class
- order
- family
- genus
- species
5
Q
What is a species?
A
a group of o. with a common characteristic ->
- can reproduce to produce a fertile offspring
