TasTAFE English Language programs Flashcards
TasTAFE offers what two CRICOS registered products to students?
Academic English
General English
Both CRICOS, both almost exclusively taken up by offshore students as their first course in Australia
Difference between Academic English and General English
allows for direct entry into all TasTAFE courses which have an IELTS requirement of 5.5. This course is therefore normally requested as a package program with another TasTAFE Diploma.
= channel product for certificate and diploma courses.
purely for English acquisition and cannot be packaged or provide direct entry into other TasTAFE courses.
When was general english offered and key market?
2019 - caters to Latin American market - fastest and largest growing ELICOS market for Australia
how long and when delivered?
10 weeks, intakes Feb, April, July and Oct (2019)
Advantage of General English based on market?
Key market is Latin America - interested in an English study experience.
But Latin American students typically study a VET program after general english hence a pathway product for additional enrolments
Advantage of Academic English based on market?
Key market is students from Asia, esp China, Vietnam and South Korea
They are interested in a higher level TasTAFE course and ability to work and live in Tas after their studies (eg migration)
What is a non covid reason for decline in General English and Academic English
TasTAFE removal of Cert 3>Diploma courses eg pathway courses to transition into after English
Removal of course in Launceston
What impact is the competitive landscape having eg the increase in private RTOs?
Increase in private RTOs - 30 in recent years.
More flexible (monthly not quarterly intakes), lower admission, lower price and higher agent commission.
+ more pathway courses
But less experienced teachers
Changes in student demand is having what impact?
become increasingly focussed on studying courses which allow them to achieve permanent residency outcomes following their studies
= less interested in courses such as business and I.T and more interested in courses such as Nursing and Community Services
- Nursing and Community services do not create demand for academic English packages because they either have English requirements that are higher than what is taught at TasTAFE (such is the case for Nursing), or small quotas that only allow small numbers of students to undertake the program (such is the case for Community Services).
Two key risks if English language courses not offered
Further enrolments in Diploma courses will not eventuate as students will go elsewhere when pathway is available
English study option highly valued by Agents (recruit 80% of TasTAFE students) becasue flexible for students and agents get commission.
They are more likely to promote flexible providers (eg private RTOs)
