Part 68 BasicMed Privileges and Limitations
When do you need an Instrument Rating?
- When flying in conditions that are below the minimum required for VFR flight
- Anytime you are on a IFR flight plan
- If you want to fly into Class A airspace
When is a IFR flight plan required
- Flight into controlled airspace while in IMC
- In Class A Airspace
In Uncontrolled airspace
- Must be IFR rated
- IFR flight plan no required
What should you do when departing outside of controlled airspace during IMC
- File IFR flight plan
- Receive clearance before entering controlled airspace
What must you do in order to remain current for IFR flight?
Within the last 6 months you must do
- 6 instrument approaches
- Holding procedures
- Intercepting and tracking courses using navigational systems
What training devices can you use to remain current?
- Airplane
- Approved flight simulator
- Flight training device
What do you do if you let your IFR recency lapse?
You have 6 months to regain proficiency
This can be done in
- Simulator
- in airplane with safety pilot (VMC)
If you dont become current in the 6 month grace period what must you do
Pass an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)
Who can conduct an Instrument Proficiency Check?
- FAA Examiner (DPE)
- Instrument Instructor
How long are you current again after an IPC?
6 calendar months after an IPC
What is IFR flight time
- Flying the aircraft solely by reference to flight instruments (actual or simulated)
What must you put in your logbook in order to log sim instrument?
Pilot must enter
- Place
- Type of each instrument approach
- Name of safety pilot
What are the qualifications for a safety pilot
- At least a private pilot
- Appropriately rated in the aircraft
- Has a valid flight review
