what is non-verbal communication
body language, gestures, physical distance, facial expressions, touch and smell
what effective communication?
listener/receiver attributes, active listening, working collaboratively, assertive communication, the impact of hearing impairment and language delay
what is communication?
requires BOTH talking and listening, effective communciation exits when the listener receives, interprets and understands the message as it was intended from the speaker, without listening there can be no communication
what are some examples of effective communication?
reading and writing, mobile phones, email, fax, twit, sc, facebook, translating languages, verbal face to face conversation
where have we learnt a lot about our communication?
a lot of what we know about communication has come from research with children who have specific language impairments
what are examples of non-verbal communication?
facial expression, touch, gestures, physical distance, smell, physical appearance
what does communication require in order to be effective?
don’t speak too fast or too soft/quiet, don’t use exact same tone, no extensive sentences, exclude unnecessary detail
what are some examples of effective listening?
some form of response (smiling, nodding, replying), ongoing checking, feedback and replying between listener and speaker
what are the four main levels of communication?
- facts, knowledge and information
- thoughts and beliefs
- feelings and emotions
- formal and polite
what is assertive communication?
involves honestly expressing opinions and feelings in a l way that does not infringe on the rights of others
what are the 3 steps of assertive communication?
- saying something that shows you are trying to understand the other persons position
- stating the problem and what you want to change
- making a specific statement about what you want to change
