What is the definition of addiction according to the WHO?
repeated use of a psychoactive substance or
substances, to the extent that the user (referred to as an addict)
- is periodically or chronically intoxicated
- shows a compulsion to take the preferred substance(s)
- has great difficulty in voluntarily stopping substance use
- exhibits determination to obtain psychoactive substances
In the DSM-IV they made use of two different substance disorders, what are these?
Substance abuse and substance dependence
How many criteria needed to be met in the DSM-IV? and DSM-V?

What criteria is dropped and what criteria is added in the DSM-V compared to DSM-IV?
Dropped: legal problems
Added: Craving
Non-substance-related disorders:
addictive disorders that do not involve ingestion of a psychoactive substance.
Definition: A repeated behaviour leading to significant harm or distress. The behaviour is not reduced by the person and persist over a significant period of time. The harm or distress is of a functionally imparing nature.
There are also 4 exlusion criteria for behavioural addiction:
- behaviour is better explained by an underlying disorder
- Functional impairment results from an activity that is the consequence of a willful choice
- The behaviour can be characterized as not leading to significant functional impairment or distress.
- behaviour is a result of a coping strategy.
What are the meassures within the DSM-V for substance use disoorder? (severity)
MIld: 2-3 criteria
Moderate: 4-5 critera
Severe: 6 or more criteria
