Examples of Danger Areas
- Open areas
- Roads and trails
- Streams and rivers
- Lakes
- Beaches
- Ridgelines
- Known enemy positions
Types of Danger Areas
- Linear Danger Area
- Small Open Danger Area
- Large Open Danger Area
- Series of Danger Areas
Linear Danger Area
- Best characterized by roads and trails
- Each flank of the patrol exposed to a relatively narrow field of fire
Small Open Danger Area
An open area of such size that a portion of the patrol may be exposed to enemy fire
Large Open Danger Area
- An open area of such size that a small recon patrol may be completely exposed while moving through it
- Includes open fields or cross compartment movement, as in from valley to hilltop
Series of Danger Areas
- A series of linear danger areas
- Can be roads in a grid layout or defensive echelons of successive strong points or trench lines
Danger Area Crossing Steps
- Identify point of low observation (curve, vegetation, low terrain)
- Establish near side security
- Designate far side rally point
- Cover far side, flanks, and avenues of approach
- Send first element to recon and secure far side, signal when clear to cross
- Occupy far side, APL and flank security crossing last
- Remove evidence of crossing
Two Man DA Crossing
Move back to back guns up covering avenues of approach
Linear Methods
- Bump and go
- By two’s or three’s
- On line
Bump and Go
Patrol stays in line formation, crosses one person at a time
- Most recent to cross and about to cross establish flank security
- About to cross hands off flank to next in line, then takes recent cross sector on arrival
Cross by Two’s
- ATL and ARTO (rear guard) establish flank security
- PL and RTO establish rear security
- PT and N move to cross, recon and establish far side
- PL and RTO cross, establish far side front security
- APL and ARTO cross
Cross by Three’s
- Basically moving two half circles across one at a time
- Front three have 9-3 o’clock
- Rear three have 3-9 o’clock
Cross on Line
Whole element crosses at one time, with 360 degree security
SODA Principles
- Avoid if possible by proper planning
- Bypass using 90 degree offset or skirting
- Maintain traveling overwatch
