Tanks Flashcards
What is “free board” in regards to tanks?
Free board is a space kept between the top of water level and the bottom of the roof slab of a tank.
It is the depth between the overflow pipe and the base of the roof slab, i.e., the clearance maintained between the maximum water level and the roof slab.
For a field-erected tank, what type of test is important for the bottom seams?
Vacuum box test
What type of test is being described here: “_________ testing is a non-destructive examination used when trying to locate weld seam leaks. A vacuum box and a compressor create a high or low pressure vacuum while a detergent solution is applied to the test area. The detergent bubbles, making leaks visible within the created pressure envelope.”

For a pump suction line coming off a tank, you will often have a valve and an expansion joint. Which one should be first and why?
The valve should be directly on the tank nozzle, so if there’s a leak or repair needed to the expansion joint, you can isolate it without having to drain the tank.
