TAG metabolism diseases Flashcards
What is tetrahydrolipstatin?
derived from bacteria; not an appetite suppressant; does not need to be absorbed (is not absorbed); panreatic lipase inhibitor; –reduces calorie intake; not super good at reducing weight–>only a 5-15% decrease is weight
side effects of orlistat
steatorrhea
side effects of olestra
cramps, gas, bloating, diarrhea, binds to fat-soluble vitamins–>need to supplement
what is an advantage of olestra?
cause a large reduction in polychlorinated biphenyls
what is MGAT and where is it found?
monoacylglycerol acyltransferase; found only in the intestine, needed for absorption of dietary TAGs
waht happens in MGAT2 -/- mice?
have a reduced RATE of dietary fat absorption; no intestinal issues (fatty stools, diarrhea, etc); protects against obesity
frederickson classification of type I familial hyperchylomicronemia defect, lipoprot increase, plasma appearance, prevalence
defect in LPL/apoc2, CMs increased, creamy top layer, 1/1 000 000
frederickson classification of type II familial hypercholesterolnemia defect, lipoprot increase, plasma appearance, prevalence
defect in LDL receptor, LDL increased, clear, 1/500–uptake problem
frederickson classification of type III familial dysbetalipoproteinemia defect, lipoprot increase, plasma appearance, prevalence
defect in apoE, intermediate density lipoprotein increased, clear, 1/10 000
frederickson classification of type IV familial hypertriglyceridemia defect, lipoprot increase, plasma appearance, prevalence
increased VLDL, turbid, 1/100–caused by defects in the liver
what is ApoC2?
activator of LPL, lipoprotein lipase (expressed on CMs)
