• In a tight square, keeping up constant fire by rows moving back to reload whilst next row moves forward to fire.
• Increase chance of hitting as it is a group fire

• 360 defence, defending from all sides
• Flexibility, if one square is defeated, another moves to take its place
• Protects muskets from cavalry
• Push of pike, combined weight against other pikemen

In pairs between infantry, ensures protection from infantry.

• On flanks, provides protection and can counter infantry from flanks
• Not in way of muskets
