A
Local men who trained together to defend their area. They would often refuse to fight elsewhere.

A
Forced men to fight, increased troops effectively. However the troops were mainly poorly trained and deserted because they were forced.

- Those with military experience had command
- Paid more 8 pence a day
- Conscription used to recruit
- Soldiers recruited from local areas all over the country
- Russet coat as uniform
- Still training during peacetime

What factors caused changes in recruitment
A
- Development of muskets meant soldiers needed drill training.
- Square formation meant soldiers needed discipline.
- Parliament introduced standing army, Cromwell developed new model army.
