T9 YR11 Flashcards
What is organic chemistry?
Chemistry of carbon
Where can crude oil come from?
A finite resource - found in rocks, plankton, plants that photosynthesise to release co2
Define a hydrocarbon?
Are compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen only
Give 4 of the starting hydrocarbons?
Methane - 1 Carbon
Ethane - 2
Propane - 3
Butane - 4
Are alkanes saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated
What happens to boiling point when chain length increases?
Increases - more energy needed to break intermolecular forces
What happens to volatility when chain length increases?
Decreases as volatility is the tendency of substance to turn into a gas, stronger intermolecular forces
What happens to viscosity when chain length increases?
Increase due to more energy needed to separate intermolecular forces
What happens to flammability when chain length increases?
Decrease as there is more incomplete combustion
What does incomplete combustion release?
Carbon monoxide which is a toxic gas that is colourless and can be fatal
What is the complete combustion of hydrocarbons?
O2 = CO2 + H2O
Give a summary of the process of cracking hydrocarbons?
Steel container called cracking and can occur by heat or catalytic cracking - thermal decomposition reactions take place
ALWAYS FORM AN ALKANE
What is the test to differentiate between alkanes and alkenes?
Bromine water test - Alkenes will decolorise bromine water - ALKENES VERY REACTIVE
