T3 YR10 - Structure and bonding Flashcards
Define a compound?
Substance made up of 2 or more different atoms that are chemically bonded
How does ionic bonding work?
When electrons exchange to ensure full outer shells
How does covalent bonding work?
Sharing electrons given no charge is present with ions
Name the 5 complex ions?
Carbonate, sulfate, nitrate, hydroxide, ammonium
How are ionic compounds formed?
When metals react with non metals
In covalent bonding, do elements exchange electrons?
No, they share electrons in a COVALENT BOND
Is ionic bonding weak or strong?
Very strong
What are ionic bonds?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction
What are typical melting points of ionic substances?
Very high, harder to break down due to strong bonds
Do ionic substances conduct electricity?
Ions cannot move due to it being an ionic solid
Define ionic aqueous?
Freely moving ions
Define simple molecule?
Two or more small atoms joined together
What are intermolecular forces?
Attractions between separate molecules
Why can’t simple molecules conduct electricity?
Not in distilled water so they are not pure minerals
Can graphite or diamond conduct electricity?
Graphite given the extra electron on the outer shell
