Authority of the Magisterium
- Catholics are expected to take the teachings of the Magisterium very seriously as the authority has come from Christ himself and the magisterium is guided by God to make the correct teachings.
- Popes and Bishops are part of an unbroken chain going back to the 12 apostles and Jesus himself.
What does Infalliable mean?
It can’t be wrong - The pope can make an official doctrine infalliable -
What does baptism symbolise?
- Christians becoming a ‘child of God’
- Holy Spirit is shared
- Joining with Jesus after his death - rising up of water
Why is Baptism important?
- Original sin is cleansed
- Person becomes a member of the Church
- Person joins with Jesus’ death and resurrection, shares his victory over sin and death
- God promises the person will join him in heaven after death.
What does Deuteronomy 6:4-5 refer to?
- ‘Hear O Israel: The Lord is Our God, the Lord alone’
- This stresses there is only one God
- From the NT, christians have come to believe that God is 3 persons - There is still only one God though.
- Forms the foundation for the belief in the Trinity.
What does Matthew 3: 16-17 refer to?
- Baptism of Jesus
- ‘This is my son, the beloved with whom I am well pleased’
- The Holy Spirit is the love that unites the Father and the Son - represented by a dove.
- Father calls Jesus his son

- ‘Maker of heaven and Earth’
- ‘Of all things visible and invisible’
What does the Nicene Creed tell us about the Son?
- ‘Only begotten Son of God’

- ‘Has spoken through the prophets’

What does the Council of Nicea confirm?
- The son is eternally begotten from the father.
- The father and the son have always coexisted together.
- They are both equal and of the same nature.
What does the Council of Constantinople confirm?
- The Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the Trinity and fully God.
- Jesus is both fully human and fully God.
What does St Augustine tell us about the trinity?
- ‘God is love’
- Love can’t exist on its own, must be something to give it and to receive it. Therefore love needs 3 things: The person who loves, the person who is loved and the person united in love.
- The trinity can be thought of as 3 persons united in love.
