Fully Human

A

It’s dangerous to focus on Jesus’ humanity because there is a tendency to fally into the heresy that Jesus was not really God - Just a very good person.
* ‘Jesus Christ, therefore the word made flesh, was sent as a man to men’ - Dei Verbum 4 (2nd Vatican Council)

The Beattitudes

A
  • First part of the Sermon on the Mount.
  • 8 Attitudes that are holy (blessed by God)
  • Jesus fulfilled the law, following it and making it better.
  • In the Old Testament, the law mainly focused on the actions people should or shouldn’t do but Jesus taught that it is more important to focus on people’s attitudes. E.G ‘Do not commit murder’ —-> Do not even get angry at someone.
  • The Beattitudes are a series of statements in which Jesus blessed certain attitudes/approaches to living and said how people will be rewared for them. E.G ‘Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the Earth’ and ‘Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God’

29
Q

Grace and the Sacramental nature of Reality

A
  • The sacrament is defined as ‘An outward sign of an inward grace’ meaning a sacrament is a sign of God’s love.
  • Catholics believ in the sacramental nature of reality which means the whole reality can be seen as a sacrament or the world and everything in it is a sign of God’s love and God’s presence and love can be seen throughout the world.
30
Q

How has the Incarnation played a role in helping Catholics view reality as sacramental?

A
  • Before the incarnation, God was seen as a distant (though caring) being.
  • Jesus was the ultimate gift from God to show his love for humanity.
  • Jesus helped to bring God’s love and presence into the world making it sacramental in nature.
31
Q

When does life begin?

A
  • Catholics believe that human life begins at the moment of conception as after the Annunciation Mary, now pregnant, visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is also pregnant with John the Baptist. When Mary greets Elizabeth, Elizabeth is ‘Filled with the holy spirit’. Her unborn baby also reacts to the presence of Jesus
  • ‘For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy’ showing that John teh Baptist while still a foetus in the womb, was able to react to the presence of Jesus.
32
Q

What are Catholic views on Abortion?

A

The catholic chruch teaches that humans are made in the image of God meaning all human life is holy and should be protected. Because human life begins at the moment of conception, this protection should extend to unborn foetuses and therefore the church is against abortion.

33
Q

How might Catholics protect unborn children?

A
  • Support a pro-life organisation that campaigns to reduce the abortion limit or ban abortion completely.
  • Support an organisation that cares for women who have decided not to abort their child, but are facing emotional or financial problems as a result.
