T5 - Ions, Ionic Bonding and Giant Ionic Structures Flashcards
What is an ion?
an electrically charged atom or a group of atoms that are formed by the loss or gain of electrons
What do ions have the same electronic structure as?
noble gases
Why do atoms lose or gain electrons?
to gain a full outer shell
What is an ionic bond?
Strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
they have giant ionic structures - giant ionic structures have strong electrostatic forces of attraction which require a lot of energy to overcome
why do ionic compounds not conduct electricity when solid
ions are not free to move
why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten and in aqueous solution
the ions are free to move
