T1 - Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table Flashcards
What is an element?
a substance made up of only one type of atom
what is a compound
a substance made up of more than one type of atom chemically bonded together
what is relative atomic mass
The average mass of an atom of an element compared to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
what is a mixture
different types of particles in the same physical space but not chemically joined
why do pure substances have a fixed melting and boiling point?
they are made up from only one chemical element or compound and therefore the melting and boiling points of the particles are the same
why does a mixture melt over a range of temperatures
they are made up from more than one chemical element or compound and therefore the melting and boiling points of these compounds will vary
what is an atom
the smallest part of an element that still behaves as that element
where are protons found
in the nucleus of an atom
where are neutrons found
in the nucleus of an atom
where are electrons found
orbiting in shells around the nucleus
