T3 | Impact of IT Systems on Organisations Flashcards
Security
IT Systems must be secure (firewalls, anti-virus, CCTV, Security guards, Encryption etc)
Staff Training
Initial training sessions + ongoing training
Working practices
+ Positive changes: Remote working, flexible working
- Negative impacts: Stress, due to answering emails constantly at home
Productivity
Newer IT systems can increase productivity and profitability
Replacement or Integration?
Often, new and old systems will run in parallel for a period of time (costly)
Integration
Can solve problems, do one office at a time/phased integration
Integration - Disadvantages
- New and old system may not work together
- Harder to maintain
- Compatibility software/hardware issues
Downtime
Minimal downtime essential, important systems need redundancy to help reduce downtime.
How to reduce Downtime?
- UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)
- 2 HDD’s or more in RAID
- 2 or more internet connections
- Carefully testing
Testing
System must be tested to see if all features in spec are working correctly.
Before implementation:
- Specification (employer and customer needs)
- Timeline (milestones)
- Progress compared to timeline constantly (if costs rise, project may be cancelled before more money is wasted)
Costs of IT Systems
Costs will vary, but cost will be far more than just hardware
What are the other costs of IT Systems?
- Setup costs
- Security costs
- Maintenance costs
- Testing costs
- Interest on loans
Employee and Customer needs
These will vary depending on the scenario
Accessibility
Computer systems must be accessible for all users (TTS, voice commands, large displays, ergonomic mouse/keyboard, eye-tracking)
