a location with meaning, places can be meaningful to individuals in ways that are personal or subjective
What does sense of place mean?

What are the 3 theoretical approaches to place?
- A descriptive approach = idea the world is a set of places that can be studied
- A social constructionist approach = sees a place as a product of a certain time and social processes e.g. Trafalgar Square has colonial connotations
- A phenomenological approach = individual experiences and interpret a place
How can lived experience be explored?
identity and belonging
How can identity explore lived experience?
Identity can be local by emotional ownership for a place, rarely political but shown through nimbyism ‘not my back yard’ when people are reluctant for change, it can be regional as people have loyalty to a district and it can be national when someone is patriotic and loyal to a nation
- People might identify with a place through a language, flag, national anthem and cultural events
- Places can lose identity due to glocalisation has occurred with TNCs entering local markets creating ‘clone towns’ and placelessness
How can belonging explore sense of place?
Belonging means to be part of a community, it can be affected by race, sexuality, age, gender, socio-economic status – as globalisation has occurred migration has increased making places much more diverse – London has become most diverse city in the World
What is an insider and outsider?
-Insider = an individual within a place/who lives there and has an experience of the place and knows its daily rhythms
-Outsider = someone who is not from the certain place/doesn’t live there/has little or no experience of that place.
What does Topophobia and topophilia mean?
Topophobia = fear of place
Topophilia = love of a place
What are the 2 categories of place?
Experienced place = a place where someone has spent time in
Media place = a place that someone has read about or seen on film and has high expectations
What are the 2 factors contributing to sense of place?
- Endogenous = internal factors (physical and human)
- Exogenous = external factors
Name some exogenous factors influencing place?
- Governmental policies = These can help attract businesses to places to stimulate economic growth e.g. Enterprize zones and tax reductions
- MNC = job creation but also job loss e.g. port Talbot, also in 2010 Cadbury factory was closed in Bristol
- Impacts from Global institutions = in 2015 the world bank was running 15 development projects in Haiti post-earthquake
Give examples of continuity or change
- Port Sunlight = in 1888 William Lever a factory owner created a community for his workers to live in, in 1966 they became a conservation area and have changed little since.
- Devonport, Plymouth = Devonport and Plymouth were separated by a naval wall from the dockyard, and it was a very deprived area, between 2001-11 this changed considerably bring new investment and regeneration and destruction of the wall.
- Medellin = in 1990s due the power of Pablo Escobar it was a crime infested area and extremely deprived. Since then, it’s gone under significant rebranding with main focuses on accessibility and tertiary sector.
