T2: Experimental Design || Flashcards
What is an independent (manipulated) variable?
Something that is manipulated by the experimenter
What is a subject variable?
Not directly manipulated by the experimenter
What is a true experiment?
Has a MV
Random assignment of participants
Can achieve prediction and explanation
What is a quasi experiment?
Has a SV
Can achieve prediction but not explanation
Cant conclude relationship between IV and results
What is a confounding variable?
A third factor (Z) that affects the IV and DV and makes it not possible to determine what differences may be causing effects on the DV
What are the five issues about IVs?
Control group, placebo effect, single/double blind. study, demand characteristics, choosing levels properly
What is a between subject design
Subject tested on one level of the IV
What is a within subject design
Subject tested on both levels of the IV
How can we control for subject variables in a BSD?
Random assignment, matching of gender, make subject variables a CV
Why does a WSD reduce subject variability and error variance more?
Each part is their own control for variables, makes it easier to detect small differences between treatment conditions
What do uncontrolled variables turn into?
Confounding variable
What is an order effect?
The order in which part experience the MV can cause practice which creates confounds
