T2: Experimental Design | Flashcards
What are Descriptive Statistics?
Summarise the data collected from the sample
What are Inferential Statistics?
Generalise from the sample to the population
What is a Dependent Variable?
What allows us to measure the POI because it indirectly reflect it eg IQ test
Operational Definition
The specification of how the POI will be measured
What is the POI?
Property of Interest is what you are trying to measure eg intelligence
How do you measure the POI?
Dependent Variable
When is the DV valid AND reliable?
If it measures the POI
If under the same conditions it gives the same measure and contains minimum measurement error
What is the Ceiling Effect?
When a task is too easy and the results are too high
What is the Floor Effect?
When a task is too hard and the results are too low?
What are the types of measurements for a DV?
Numerical and Categorical
What are the types of numerical measurement?
Interval and ratio scale
What are the types of categorical measurement?
Ordered and nominal scale
Interval scale
Establishes an equal unit of measurement and know the difference between even points on scale eg celcius temp
Ratio scale
Establishes an equal unit in the scale and contains a true ZERO point! allows ratio statements eg twice as big
Ordered scale
Categories without order eg gender
