work close to a bunsen flame - allow upward convection currents to sterilise the air

use a sterile pipette, bottle(neck) or spreader + flame the loop - maintain a pure culture of bacteria

open the petri dish lid as little as possible - to prevent bacteria in the dish getting out + bacteria in the air getting in

disinfect surfaces with virkon - kill bacteria on surfaces to prevent spread

wash hands before and after - prevent contamination

soak pipette in disinfectant - prevent cross contamination
