What is T1DM?
T1DM is characterised by an autoimmune condition in which pancreatic beta-cells of the Islets of Langerhans are dysfunctional. Partial or complete deficiency of insulin production > Hyperglycaemia
Resultant hyperglycaemia > Chronic insulin treatment.
What is LADA?
Autoimmune diabetes leading to insulin deficiency can present later in life = latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA).
Can diabetic ketoacidosis be a feature of T2DM?
Yes; presents in childhood
T1DM is though to be a condition of childhood and dearly adulthood. Keeping this in mind what is the challenge caused by this fact.
Difficult to differentiate between adult-onset type I diabetes from type II diabetes.
Is T1DM associated with a genetic predisposition that is potentiated by an environmental trigger?
Yes
