T and B cell Development Flashcards
What enzymes are needed for BCR production?
The same ones for TCR production.
Which gene segments make a heavy chain?
V, D, and J. The C segment makes a constant region of the heavy chain; Determines isotype.
Which gene segments make a light chain?
V and J make the variable region of the light chain. C makes the constant region of the light chain.
Where do Immature B cells go to finish maturation?
The spleen and lymph nodes.
What the difference between immature B cells and mature B cells in terms of activation?
Mature B cells are activated by high affinity binding to antigens; These cells are allowed to multiply. Others die by apoptosis.

Where are T-independent B cells?
Marginal zone and B1 cells; Activated by non protein antigens. Early stages of adaptive response.
What is the role of the Marginal zone and B1 cells?
Produce natural antibodies; Low affinity for carbohydrate antigens (gut microflora) and antibodies against blood group antigens.
