Q

Why is TMS (tetramethylsilane) often used as an internal reference standard for the calibration of HNMR spectroscopy?

A
  • chemical shift/signal outside range of common chemical shift/signal
  • strong signal (all (12) H atoms in same environment)
  • singlet/no splitting of signal
  • volatile/easy to remove/easily separated
  • inert/stable
  • soluble in most organic solvents
