Q

genetic explantion

A

greater gentic simialirty in familiaies assosicatied with how liekly both will develop sz

gottesmans study
there are manu candidate genes for sz
aetologically heterzegegous-different studies have found diferfent candidate genes meaning its ateogically heterzegenus (different combinations)
polygenic-needs several factors to work together

Q

dopamine hypothesis

A

sz causes excell levels of neurotransmiiter dopamine
diffreent view, nuerons in brain of sz are oversenstive causing overexaggerted reponses meaning unncessary messages are relayed to brain

Q

dopaminergia in sub cortex

A

high levels of dopamine acitvity in sub-cortex(central areas of the brain)

e.g excess levels of dopamine receptors in broacs area resposnisbe for speech poverty

Q

typical antipsychotics

A

example-chlorpromazine
taken as pill/injection not often
start dosage of 400-800mg
max dosage 1000mg
binds with D2 receptors and blocks dopamine receptors from brain

Q

atypical antipsychotics

A

newer then typical antipsychotics
less side effects
start disage of 300-450mg a day
has side effect called agranlyocytosis-blood condition where white blood cells reduced

binds to dopamine recpetors same as chlopromazinee but also acts as serotonin and glucatmate receptors hlep reduce depression and anxiety

Q

risperidone

A

taken in smaller doses
start dosage 4-8mg
max dosage 12mg
binds wiith both dopamine and serotonin receptor s
binds with dopamine receptors more strongly then clozapine so can take as small doses

Q

strength-practical applications

A

nurses have relied on antipsyhotics for mental health institutions

effeicently been able to calm patients
davis et al perforemd meta analysis on more then 100 patients comparing antipsychotics with placebos

found drugs to be more succesfull as improved condiditon within 6 weeks
fewer then 25% imporved with placebos

strength as showed used psotively to help patients

wekaness -as critisized for ethical implants due to lack of informed consent
