Systems (Respiratory) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the overall function?
A
- To bring oxygen in and push carbon dioxide out
2
Q
What organs make up the respiratory system?
A
- Nose, mouth, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
3
Q
Function of the Organ: Nose / Mouth
A
- To breathe in the oxygen around you
4
Q
Function of the Organ: Pharynx
A
- This is the throat, oxygen needs to get through here to reach the trachea
5
Q
Function of the Organ:
Trachea
A
- The windpipe
6
Q
Function of the Organ: Bronchi
A
- At the lungs the trachea break off into two branches called bronchi
7
Q
Function of the Organ: Lungs
A
- The oxygen will pass into your lungs
8
Q
Gas Exchange
A
- Each of the bronchi branch again and again, ending in tiny air sacs called alveoli
- Each is surrounded by a network of capillaries
9
Q
Diffusion
A
- Oxygen always diffuses into the blood
- The oxygen concentration in blood is always less than the concentration of oxygen in the air
- As blood picks up the oxygen, it is carried to other parts of the body where it diffuses out of the blood and into the cells
- Oxygen + Carbon Dioxide have to diffuse through two thin walls: the walls of the capillaries and the alveoli
10
Q
Role of Cilia and Mucus
A
- Some epithelial cells that line the trachea and bronchi produce mucus
- Many epithelial cells have cilia, which helps move mucus and filter foreign material
11
Q
Muscles Involved
A
- The diaphragm
12
Q
Mechanisms of Breathing
A
- Diaphragm: Muscle under the lungs
- Intercostal Muscles: between the ribs
13
Q
External Respiration
A
- Exchange of gasses between lungs and blood
14
Q
Internal Respiration
A
- Exchange of gasses between blood and cells
15
Q
Cellular Respiration
A
- Energy releasing actions of the cell
