Systems Flashcards
What are the many things around us made up of?
Parts that work together to form a system.
Where can systems be found?
In natural things and also in the things made by Man, i.e. systems can be found in both man-made and natural things.
What led to the invention of the ball point pen?
Ink from the fountain pen would smudge and stain the fingers. A Hungarian journalist wanted to improve the fountain pen and thus studied how to improve the fountain pen. This led him to put a rolling ball in a socket at the pen’s tip.
How does the ball point pen work?
While writing, the ball picked up ink from a cartridge and the ink would flow smoothly. The ball point pen is a man-made system made up of a clip, a joint, a cap, a button spring, a tube, cartridge, etc.
Give some examples of things that work together to form a system. / Give some examples of man-made systems.
Pen, clock, timepiece (watch), telephone, torch light, cars, swiss army knife, memory stick that can store music, photographs and information, etc.
Give some examples of natural systems.
Solar system which is made up of the sun and eight planets, living things, plants and animals.
Name the eight planets found in the Solar System.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
(Remember as My very educated mother just served us nachos.)
What is a system?
A system is made up of two or more parts that function / work together.
How does a system function?
By having the two or more parts function / work together.
What happens if one part of a system is damaged, missing or does not work correctly?
The system will not be able to carry out its function or functions well / properly.
Systems can be simple or complex. How can I differentiate between simple and complex systems?
Simple systems are made up of a few simple parts while complex systems are made up of many complicated parts. Each part may even be smaller parts.
Is the car a simple or complex system?
Complex system… It is made up of wheels, doors, mirrors, engine, etc.
What is a living thing made up of?
Many parts. Each part has a specific function.
What do all parts of a living thing do?
Work together to keep the living thing alive.
