Systems Flashcards
Tracheal
gas exchange
*network of branching tubules in body
*supplies O2 directly to body cells
*circulatory system not involved in gas exchange
*some insects use flight to pump air in
Gills
gas exchange
can absorb 80% of water oxygen
Lungs
gas exchange
*circulatory system (open or closed) transports gases between lungs and body
* Lungs filled with positive pressure in amphibians, negative in mammals
Protonephridia
excretory
*Protonephridium - network of dead-end tubules that branch through body
*smallest branches capped by flame bulb
*excrete dilute fluid
*found in worms
Metanephridia
Excretory
*open ended tubules that collect fluid and produce urine
*function in excretion + osmoregulation
*found in mollusca and worms (each segment)
Malpighian Tubules
Excretory
*blind tubes arising from gut
*remove nitrogenous wastes + fxn in osmoregulation
*mostly uric acid
*conserves water very well
Kidneys
Excretory
*found in vertebrates
*fxn in excretion + osmoregulation
*nephrons are functional unit
*produce urine hyperosmotic to body fluids
