Systems Flashcards
Nervous system
the body’s speedy communication system that communicates via neurons and neurotransmitters
Central nervous system
spinal cord and brain
Peripheral nervous system
sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
Somatic nervous system
controls voluntary movement of the body’s skeletal muscles (PNS)
Automatic nervous system
controls the other muscles that work without conscious thought (heart and lungs) (PNS)
Sympathetic nervous system
arouses the body mobilizing its energy in stressful situations (ANS)
Parasympathetic nervous system
calms the body, conserving its energy (ANS)
Endocrine system
the body’s slow chemical communication system (communicate thru hormones and glands)
Pituitary gland
“master gland”, releases hormones that regulate other glands it’s adjacent to hypothalamus
Thyroid gland
Hyperthyroidism= weight loss, sleep issues
Hypothyroidism= weight gain, fatigue
Parathyroid gland
regulates the level of calcium in the blood
Adrenal gland
consist of the adrenal
medulla and the cortex; The medulla secretes hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine OR adrenaline & noradrenaline) during stressful and emotional situations. BOTH are active
during fight or flight (increase heart rate)
Hypothalamus
governs pituitary gland and connects the brain and endocrine system
