Parts of Neurons/ functions Flashcards
Dendrites
the branches of a neuron that receives input from other cells
Myelin Sheath
an insulating layer that forms around nerves and helps transmit electrical impulses quickly/efficiently
Axon
cable part of a neuron where electrical impulses from the neuron travel away to be received by other neurons
Cell body
the part of a neuron that contains the nucleus and most organelles
Axon terminals
the end of the axon that contains neurotransmitters and makes synaptic contact with the next neuron in the chain
Synapse
a fluid filled gap to connect neurons
Neurotransmitters
released from the sending neuron travel across the synapse and bind to the receptor sites on the receiving neuron, causing it to generate action potential
Terminal buttons
located at the end of a neuron and are responsible for sending signal to other neuron
Glial cells
nourish, provide insulation, and remove waste (myelin=special type of glial cell)
