What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)?
An autoimmune disease in which atypical immune response results in chronic inflammation and destruction of healthy tissue
What are common systemic complications for SLE?
Heart Failure
Renal Failure
What are risk factors for developing SLE?
Genetics
Females 20-40 yrs
Ethnicity (basically non-white)
What are the signs and symptoms of SLE?
Butterfly rash (malar rash)
Pancytopenia
Raynauds
Fatigue, malaise, weakness
Joint pain, swelling, tenderness
Alopecia
Oral lesions
Anorexia/weight loss
Blurred vision
What is the treatment for SLE?
NSAIDs
Steroids
Immunosuppressive agents methotrexate
Antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine
What constitutes a flare up of SLE?
a flare up is a period of exacerbation
How to avoid SLE flare ups
Limit UV and prolonged sun exposure
Decrease stress
Avoid infections
Consult with provider before starting new medications/supplements
Patient education for SLE?
Protection from the sun (sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt)
Report evidence of infection
Avoid crowds, sick people
Must be in remission for 6 months before considering pregnancy
Use mild protein shampoo and avoid harsh hair treatments
Avoid ETOH
Understand the effects of disease on lifestyle
