- autoimmune disease
- type 3 hypersensitivity reaction
- ass with HLA B8, DR2, DR3
- immune complex deposition can affect organs

Features of SLE?
A
- fatigue
- fever
- mouth ulcers
- lymphadenopathy
-malar butterfly rash (spares nasolabial folds)
- discoid rash
- photosensitivity
- Raynaud’s phenomenon
- lived reticularis
- non scarring alopecia
- arthralgia
- non erosive arthritis
- pericarditis (most common)
- myocarditis
- pleurisy
- fibrosing alveolitis
- anxiety and depression
- psychosis
- seizures

Investigations for SLE?
A
- 99% are ANA positive
- anti-dsDNA
- anti-Smith
ESR and anti-dsDNA is used for disease monitoring

Management for lupus nephritis
A
- treat HTN
- glucocorticoids with either mycophenolate or cyclophosphamide
- mycophenolate is preferred to azathioprine to decrease end stage renal disease
