Systematics: Taxonomy and Nomenclature Flashcards
Chapter 5
What is systematics?
The science that deals with the description, identification, classification, and nomination of biological objects
What is taxonomy
The system that is involved in the classification and naming of organism, whereas systematics is involved in the determination of the evolutionary relationship between of organisms
What occurs Characterization/description
The character to be studies is escribed for al its morphological and other characteristics
What occurs identification?
Based on the studied characteristics, the identification of the organism is carried out to know whether it is similar to any known groups
What occurs during classification?
The organization is now classified based on its resemblance to different taxa
What occurs during nomenclature?
The organism is given a new name based on the rules and conventions of nomenclature
What is taxonomy
The classification of organism in a ordered system that indicates natural relationships
Who is the father of taxonomy?
Carolus Linnaeus
What are the levels of taxonomic classification
Kingdom
Phylum/Division
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Specie
What is a specfifc epithet
The term for the uncapitalized second word used in binomial nomenclature
What is the ICBN
Internatinal Code of Botanical Nomenclature
What are the main rules of the ICBN
*The binomial system name of any species consists of two names
-generic (name of genus)
-specific (species name)
*In plant horticulture, the generic name and specific name should not be the same (this is fine in animal horticulture)
*The length of the generic name should not be less than 3 letters but not more than 12 letters
*The first letter of the generic name should be capitalized, and the first letter of the specific name should not
*When written with free hand, the generic and specific name must be underlined separately
