Living Things and Biodiversity Flashcards
What is Organization?
Hierarchical structure from cells to biosphere.
EX: Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organisms → Populations → Communities → Ecosystems → Biosphere.
Cells as the Basic Unit
The lowest level of biological organization that is “alive.”
What is Metabolism?
Chemical processes for energy generation and breakdown.
Cellular respiration, photosynthesis, fermentation.
What is Sensitivity/Irritability?
Detecting and responding to environmental changes.
Homeostasis (e.g., regulating body temperature).
What is Reproduction?
Production of offspring.
What is Growth?
Increase in size or number.
What is Adaptation?
The process by which organisms adjust to their environment to improve survival and reproduction
What isLife Span?
The duration of existence, from birth to death.
What is Competition?
The struggle for resources like space, food, or mates.
What is Energy Transfer?
Refers to the movement of energy through living systems
Sunlight → Plants → Consumers → Decomposers.
What is movement?
Locomotion or internal motion.
Ex: Flagella in bacteria, limbs in animals.
What is Death?
End of all metabolic processes.
Classification Hierarchy
Categories: Species → Genus → Family → Order → Class → Phylum → Kingdom.
