Systematic Desensitisation Flashcards
+ McGrath et al.
McGrath et al. found that 75% patients improved after systematic desensitisation therapy - suggests the treatment works for most people
+ Not time consuming
Systematic desensitisation isn’t hugely time consuming - Patients are less likely to stop or refuse he treatment, validating its use
- Evolutionary phobias
Deeply rooted evolutionary phobias, such as a fear of the dark, do not appear to be cured by S.D. - suggests that the treatment may only work for some phobias and not more complex ones, reducing the validity of the treatment
- Only certain anxiety disorders
SD can only be used to treat certain anxiety disorders - suggests other treatments are required to treat disorders that can’t be cured through SD, reducing it’s validity as a standalone treatment
