System overview Flashcards
What is the function of the endocrine system
The endocrine system is made up of glands and organs that release hormones (chemical messengers). These chemical messengers carry information and instructions from one cell to another
What are the names of endocrine glands/organs
Thyroid gland
Parathyroid gland
Adrenal Gland
Hypothalamus
Pituitary Gland
Testes
Ovaries
Pancreas
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Testes - THEM
What does the pineal gland do?
A tiny endocrine gland in the middle of the brain that helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm by secreting the hormone melatonin
What does the hypothalamus do?
Is a structure deep within the brain, an area which is an organ that links between the endocrine system and nervous system. It is a part of the brain and produces hormones that regulate hunger, thirst, heart rate mood, sleep, body temp
How many parts/lobes does the pituitary gland have?
The pituitary gland has two main parts, the anterior (front) lobe
The posterior (back) lobe Each lobe has different functions. It is an Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). Stimulates the distal and collecting
tubules in the kidneys to increase the
reabsorption of the free water into the cardiovascular system
Maintains physiologic osmolality.
What does the pituitary gland do?
Anterior:
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Growth hormone (GH)
Adrenocorticotropic hormone
Posterior:
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) (Vasopressin)
Oxytocin
What does the thyroid gland do?
Thyroxine (T4)
Triodthyronine(T3)
Calcii tonin
