5
Q
What is a synthesis reaction?
A
- A chemical reaction in which two or more simple reactants combine to make one product
- A + B —-> AB
6
Q
What is a decomposition reaction?
A
- A chemical reaction in which a more complex compound breaks down into two or more simpler compounds or elements
- AB —> A + B
7
Q
What is a combustion reaction?
A
- They always involve carbon-based compounds reacting with oxygen. These reactions release large amounts of energy in the form of heat and light
- There are 2 types: complete and incomplete
8
Q
Complete combustion
A
- Occurs when the conditions are ideal for the maximum amount of oxygen to react
- Only carbon dioxide and water are made
9
Q
Incomplete combustion
A
- Occurs when there is less than the maximum amount of oxygen present to react
- Carbon monoxide, solid carbon and water can be made
10
Q
What are the diatomic elements?
