Single & Double Displacements Flashcards
1
Q
Single Displacement Reactions
A
- Occurs when one element replaces another similar element in a compound
- AB + C —-> A + BC
2
Q
Double Displacement Reactions
A
- Involves the exchange of cations between two aqueous ionic compounds
- Many double displacement reactions involve the formation of a precipitate
- If a double displacement reaction results in two aqueous solutions, no reaction has actually taken place
- AB + CD —-> AD + CB
3
Q
What is a precipitate?
A
An insoluble solid that separates from a solution after a reaction
4
Q
What are neutralization reactions?
A
There are a special type of double displacement reaction where can acid and a base combine to produce water and a salt
5
Q
What do neutralization reactions of carbonate compounds produce?
A
They produce water and carbon dioxide because carbonic acid is unstable and decomposes
