Synthesis Flashcards
What is the process of reactant bonds breaking and product bonds forming?
Bond fission
What are the two types of bond fission?
Heterolytic and homolytic
Describe homolytic fission
Results in formation of 2 neutral radicals
Occurs when each atom retains one electron from sigma covalent bond and bond breaks evenly
Normally occurs non-polar covalent bonds broken
Describe Heterolytic fission
Results in formation of 2 opposite charged ions
Occurs when one atom retains both electrons from the sigma covalent bond and bond breaks unevenly
Normally occurs when polar covalent bonds are broken
What makes homolytic reactions unsuitable for organic synthesis?
Forms complex mixtures of products
What makes Heterolytic fission better suited for organic synthesis?
Far Fewer products
