What is syntax?
the study of sentence structures
Phrases
a collection of words that have a grammatical relationship with each other, may have a noun or a verb or neither but never both
Clauses
units of grammar that contain a subject and a verb
Main clause
the part of the sentence that can stand alone as its own sentence
Subordinate clause
part of the sentence that cannot stand alone as its own sentence
Subject
noun/pronoun at the beginning of a clause, what the clause/sentence is about
Object
in a typical clause, object is the person or thing being acted upon
Adverbial
single words, phrases, or clauses that provide extra information about an element, typically in relation to time, place, or manner
Complement
phrase or clause that provides extra information about an element, which has already been mentioned within a sentence or clause
Sentences
group of words that contain at least one main clause and may also contain other clauses,
makes sense as a whole and can stand on its own to create meaning
Declarative
making a statement, subject + predicate
Interrogative
posing a question, auxiliary + subject + rest of predicate
Imperative
issuing a directive/order, (you) + predicate
Exclamative
making an exclamation, (what/how) + subject + predicate
Coordination
uses coordinating conjunctions to combine clauses into sentences i.e. FANBOYS
