synaptic transmission Flashcards

1
Q

cholinergic synapse

A

action potential arrives at the presynaptic neurone
depolarising the membrane and causing voltage gated calcium ion channels to open
the influx of calcium ions causes the voltage gated calcium ion channels to open
the calcium ion influx causes the synaptic vesicles to fuse with the membrane releasing the neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft
the neurotransmitter binds to receptors on post synaptic neurone. this causes an action potential.

Q

is cholingeric synapse inhibitory or excitatory

A

can be excitatory if the neurotransmitter opens Na+ channels or inhibitory is the potassium channels are opened

Q

what happens at post synaptic neurone

A

the neurotransmitter diffuses across the synaptic cleft
the neurotransmitter binds to receptors on postsynaptic membrane
sodium ions enter stimulating depolarisation and an action potential in PSN
