Diaphragma
- Chest pain
- Dyspnea
- Inability to get full breath
- Anxiety. “Fright of dying”
- Stitch in the side during exercise
- Painful coughing
Iliopsoas
- Low back pain
- Difficulty getting up from seated positions
- Antalgic gait
- Difficulty walking stairs
- Unable to ‘situp’ from supine position
- Severe cases, crawling on hands and knees
Pectineus
• Deep seated groin pain, especially during abduction activity
Adductor brevis and longus
- Pain mostly during vigorous activity or muscular overload rather than rest
- Weightbearing and twist increases pain
- Limited abduction and lateral rotation
Adductor Magnus and minimus
- Intrapelvic pain
- Pain in vagina or rectum, or ‘somewhere deep inside’
- Some cases, only pain during sexual intercourse
- Difficulty positioning the leg comfortably during night, sleeping with pillow between knees
Popliteus
- Pain in the back of the knee while crouching, running or walking, especially going downhill or stairs
- Weakness of medial rotation of knee
Tibialis posterior
- Pain while walking or running
* Problems with walking running on uneven surfaces
Flexor hallucis longus and digitorum longus
• Feet hurt when walking
Sternocleidomastoideus
- Soreness in the neck
- ‘False’ lymphadenopathy
- “Tension headache”
- Ipsilateral sweating of forehead
- Reddening of the conjunctiva and tearing of the eye
- Rhinitis
- drooping or falling of the upper eyelid
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Visual disturbance when viewing parallel lines
- Postural dizziness
- Imbalance or disturbed weight perception
- Seasickness or carsickness
- “sick stomach” leading to nausea and anorexia
- Problems driving car
Rectus abdominis
- Abdominal discomfort or distress
* Long standing contraction may cause lax, distended abdomen with excessive flatus
Vastus medialis
o Buckling knee
o Toothache pain deep in knee joint which interrupts sleep
Vastus lateralis
o Locked patella
o Pain in walking
o Hurts to lie on side, pain interrupts sleep
o Knee instability
Rectus femoris
o Buckling hip syndrome
o Problems walking down stairs
o Night pain in knee (patient awakens)
Vastus intermedius
o Problems walking up stairs
o Problems fully straightening the knee
Tibialis anterior
- Dragging foot, weakness in lifting foot
* Tripping
extensor digitorum + hallucis longus
- Feet pain, typically used to the pain
- Weakness of foot when walking
- Causes entrapment of deep peroneal nerve
- Foot-drop
- Night cramps
- “Growing pains”
Splenius capitis + cervicis
o Stiff neck, limited active rotation of neck
o Blurring of vision
External and internal intercostals
o Unable to lie on active side
o Pain increased by deep inhalation
o Exercise, coughing or sneezing may be extremely painful
o Cardiac arrhythmia
Lateral oblique
- Abdominal discomfort or distress
* Long standing contraction may cause lax, distended abdomen with excessive flatus
Gluteus maximus
o Pain walking uphill
o Pain in swimming
o Problems sitting ‘still’ due to pain
Tensor fascia latae
o Problems sitting with hips flexed for long periods
o Unable to lie comfortably on active side
o Lying on opposite side often needs pillow between legs to avoid adduction and stretch (may also lie on back due to pain)
Gluteus medius
Pain in walking
Problems sleeping on affected side
Sleeping on other side often needs pillow to avoid painful stretch
Problems sitting slumped because of pressure on painful muscle
Gluteus minimus
Limp in walking
Pain in lying on affected side, may wake during night
Constant and excruciating pain
Hard to find relief of pain
Peroneal muscles
o Weak ankles
o Frequent ankle sprains
o Unstable anklesProne to ankle fractures
Rectus capitis Superior minor + major
- Headache when head presses against pillow at night
* Head rotation severely reduced
Thoracolumbar paraspinalis thorocal and lumbar
- Difficulty rising from a chair
* Problems walking stairs
Erector spina cervical
• Headache
• Tenderness of the back of head and neck
• Pressure on head from pillow may be intolerable
• Entrapment greater occipital nerve
o Numbness, tingling and burning pain in the scalp in occipital region in addition to headache
Hamstrings
- Pain in walking
- Limping gait
- Pain when getting up from chair, tend to push themselves off
- Pain may wake patients during night, problems sleeping
Gastrocnemius and soleus
- Calf cramps
* Nocturnal calf cramps
