Sympathetic Nervous System Flashcards
when does the adrenal medulla come into use?
during stress.
Give three examples of beta-blocker side effects
fatigue reduced blood flow bronchorestriction cardiac failure hypoglycaemia
what is significant about the majority of nicotinic agonists?
they don’t have therapeutic uses.
how can we tell that nicotinic receptors at the NMJ and ganglia are different?
they have different antagonists.n
Give two examples of alpha blockers.
What are their side effects?
phenolamine and prazosin.
hypotension, nasal congestion, impotence, diarrhoea.
how do alpha and beta blockers differ?
alpha lower bp by blocking sympathetic VASOCONSTRICTION.
beta lower bp by directly blocking sympathetic nervous input –> decreased FORCE of contraction.
what does sympathetic nervous system do to arteries and vein?
what is worthy of note?
constricts them
arterioles in skeletal muscle, heart and liver are dilated by circulating adrenaline.
what is the effect of AChes at the CNS?
pass BBB, initial excitation then depression –> resp failure.
what is the mechanism of ecothiopate?
phosphorylates esteratic site & binds anionic
used in glaucoma as contracts ciliary muscles (reducing intraocular p as increases fluid outflow).
