Pictogram
Icons that are used in writing. (Hieroglyphics, emojis)
Ideogram
A symbol that represents an idea or object directly rather than a particular word or speech sound. (+, =, >, <, &, ?, !)
Typography
The style and appearance of letters/words.
Sign
A conventional mark used for the idea it represents. (Think of a no-entry sign)
Symbol
A thing that represents/ stands for something else that is abstract. I:E cannot be represented directly. (Think of a dove for peace - peace has no physical manifestation so it must be represented by other things)
Icon
A sign which has common characteristics to the thing it signifies. (Think of the pictures printed on the buttons in a car)
Allegory
Using a story to give a moral/message
Visual Metaphor
Comparing 2 or more things visually
Irony
When the opposite of what’s expected occurs. Why are we surprised?
Parody
Imitation and/or exaggeration to create humor.
Stereotype
Generalization about a group of people
