A

Seeing a set of elements as a single, recognizable whole. (Think of the panda)

Proximity

A

The tendency to see a set of individual elements as a group based on their proximity. (Think of a rows and columns)

Continuation

A

The tendency to see elements arranged in a line as a group. The brain fills in missing elements along the movement created by the elements. (Think of a speedometer)

Similarity

A

Similar elements are perceived to be more related that different ones. (Think of the button shapes on a TV remote)

Figure-Ground Relationship

A

Elements are perceived as either figures/focus/foreground or ground/everything else. Oftentimes, multiple images can be seen in one design, depending on which part the user focuses on as the figure. (Think of Batman or 2 Wolverines)
