Deconstructivism Info
The deconstructivist movement was a response to modernism, characterized by it’s rejection of the idea that things should be purely functional and practical. The name came from it’s contrast to the Russian Constructivist movement that ‘broke the rules”. It is not a rebellion or message to society, but rather the unleashing of infinite possibilities when rules are disregarded.
Deconstructivist designs are:

The ADPAC is a massive building that has the form of a growing organism, sprouted from a pedestrian path with a network of successive branches. Organic shapes, lots of movement, doesn’t follow architectural norms.

Emerged in the 80’s and known for it’s bold, eclectic and unconventional approach to design. Memphis designers rejected functionalism and minimalism and instead focused on individualism and self expression. The movement took advantage of advancements in manufacturing to create unique and unconventional designs. They often combined expensive and everyday materials in the same design. It reflected consumerism, where materialistic values and desires for non essential goods played a significant role.

Reaction against “impoverished language of capitalistic design”. They valued uniqueness over trends, mass production and style. embraced ornament and decoration, rejected ideals of ‘good design’ and embraced irony and kitsch. The movement was a celebration of bad taste and sought to challenge they way think about the object.
