Q

What is mutualistic symbiosis?

A

Occurs when two different organisms live together in a relationship that benefits them both.
IF ONE IS REMOVED, OFTEN THE OTHER ONE CANNOT SURVIVE

Q

Name 2 examples of mutualistic symbiosis.

A
  • Root nodules contains nitrogen fixing bacteria
  • Cleaner fish
  • Maize containing AM fungi
  • Chemosynthesis bacteria in tube worms
  • Coral polyps - attach to rocks, contain photosynthetic algae, removes excess carbohydrates when food is low

Q

Why does a mutualistic symbiosis relationship exist between chemosynthetic bacteria and tube worms?

A
  • The bacteria generate carbons using chemicals from hydrothermal vents, forming glucose as a result (can be eaten by secondary producers)
  • The bacteria also oxidise sulphur compounds in chemosynthesis, producing organic material
