Symbiosis Flashcards
What is symbiosis?
A close relationship between two different species
What is parasitic symbiosis?
When one organism (the parasite) benefits from the other organism (the host), while causing harm to the host.
Name 2 examples of parasitic symbiosis
Any 2 from:
- Human Head Louse
- Human flea
- Mistletoe
- Human tapeworm
- Elephantiasis
What is mutualistic symbiosis?
Occurs when two different organisms live together in a relationship that benefits them both.
IF ONE IS REMOVED, OFTEN THE OTHER ONE CANNOT SURVIVE
Name 2 examples of mutualistic symbiosis.
- Root nodules contains nitrogen fixing bacteria
- Cleaner fish
- Maize containing AM fungi
- Chemosynthesis bacteria in tube worms
- Coral polyps - attach to rocks, contain photosynthetic algae, removes excess carbohydrates when food is low
What type of relationship exists between chemosynthesis bacteria and tube worms? Why?
Mutualistic symbiosis
Can chemosynthetic bacteria make food for themselves?
Yes
Why does a mutualistic symbiosis relationship exist between chemosynthetic bacteria and tube worms?
- The bacteria generate carbons using chemicals from hydrothermal vents, forming glucose as a result (can be eaten by secondary producers)
- The bacteria also oxidise sulphur compounds in chemosynthesis, producing organic material
What are chemosynthetic bacterium also known as?
Autotrophs
