Conservation And Reforestation Flashcards
What is conservation?
When an effort is made to protect a rare or endangered habitat or species
What type of activities are conservation?
- Reforestation
- Captive breeding programmes
- Protection of endangered habitats
What is an endangered species?
Species that are facing immediate threat from extinction due to damaging human activity
Why are endangered species put in different categories?
Allows landowners , policy makers and the government to target species and the habitats they are in
What % of the Earth’s land surface is covered by biodiversity hotspots?
2.3%, 34 biodiversity hotspots
What is reforestation?
- The process of allowing woodland to be restored in a landscape
- Can be natural or man intervention
What are the impacts of reforestation?
More tree species - more food types - more micro habitats- more insect species- more species of ….
What are captive breeding programmes? (eg: Giant Pandas)
- Bred in captivity (sometimes using IVF)
- Reared with minimum human contact
- Released into protected bamboo forest and monitored for the rest of their lives
How can human threats to endangered species be reduced/prevented?
Through legislation (housing, forestry, infrastructure etc)
